All roads led to Páirc Uí Rinn on Monday last, the 30th of May, as our heroic school hurling team contested the final of the Roinn B Sciath na Scol hurling competition. After excellent victories in the group stages over Scoil Íosagáin Farranree, St. Joseph’s of Cobh and Togher Boys School and a narrow defeat to St. Anthony’s, the boys earned themselves a semi-final clash with Scoil Oilibhéar. After a thrilling comeback victory the team qualified for the final where they would take on Riverstown National School.
In perfect conditions, the boys fought tirelessly and gave everything they had to in an attempt to gain a victory. However, unfortunately, they met a Riverstown team who were a small bit too good on the day. Nonetheless this will serve as invaluable experience to what was a very young Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh team, who will learn and improve as a result. On the day, and throughout the entire competition, all of our boys could not be faulted for effort and they were an absolute credit to the school and their mentors. The game finished on a scoreline of 5-9 to 3-3, which flattered Riverstown and doesn’t reflect the outstanding effort of the Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh team. On the day we had exceptional performances from all our players but Rian Foley, David Murray, David Burke and Scott Kelleher were outstanding. The full back line of Kevin Murphy, Darragh Daly and Patrick Buckley were very solid and outside them the half back line of Jack O’Callaghan, Burke and Kelleher formed a formidable defensive unit. The midfield duo of Kieran McFadden and Eoghann Desmond worked tirelessly throughout and Rian Foley, who scored two excellent goals, and David Murray were a great source of scores in the half forward line. Rian was joined in the half forward line by his younger brother, Odhran, who had a terrific game. The inside forward line of Mark Scally, Conor Dunne and Bill Cahill were a constant threat. Unfortunately the team was short of the services of Adam McNulty and Aaron Kiely through injuries, while Kevin Whelan Rock was also absent as he was on holidays. The substitutes, as they have done all year, provided the management with excellent options in what was a very competitive squad.
Scorers: Rian Foley 2-2, Conor Dunne 1-0, David Murray 0-2.
